Xbox Boss responds to PlayStation-exclusive Call of Duty concerns

Xbox chief Phil Spencer has responded to PlayStation’s very vociferous concerns about what could happen if Call of Duty becomes exclusive on the Microsoft-owned platform. In case you somehow missed it, Microsoft announced that it will be acquiring Activision for nearly $70 billion, which means it will be acquiring franchises like Call of Duty as first-party titles. It’s the biggest deal in gaming history, which has resulted in a lot of scrutiny by platform owners, players, and other regulators. As the deal makes its way through regulators, a number of concerns have been raised, and it’s about the future of Call of Duty.

Earlier this month, the head of PlayStation, Jim Ryan, raised concerns about what would happen after the Sony platform loses its Call of Duty deal in three years, which Xbox will honor. Ryan described Microsoft’s proposal as “insufficient” and certainly took up the matter with some frustration. Now, Xbox chief Phil Spencer is responding via an interview with CNBC and reaffirmed that Microsoft plans to continue releasing Call of Duty on PlayStation. Spencer also noted that while exclusive games are a part of Xbox, the company wants to make sure more gamers can play across the PC versions and even by letting gamers play games via a web browser through the cloud.

“I can’t talk too much about our placement in regulation just because of the mechanism,” Spencer said. “I’ve made it very clear to our audience and customers, where our strongest commitment is, that we expect that we will continue to ship Call of Duty on PlayStation and other places that people see, and hopefully expand the places where people play all our games. That was our goal. We put the player in the center and by Technologies like cloud, charge day, and date on PC, we expect that the games we build will be played by more players going forward. That is our goal in all the games we play today.”

Of course, unless it’s contractually obligated to do otherwise, Microsoft will be free to make Call of Duty a full Xbox exclusive if it really wants to. As it stands, Spencer says she plans to keep it on PlayStation for the foreseeable future Maine Craft It stayed that way too, it’s not hard to believe. Only time will tell if things have changed, but for now, we can only base what will happen on what Phil Spencer says because he’s the only one who really knows.
